Cameron (Holly Beach) Louisiana

Sand, beach camping, sea shells, ocean breeze, beautiful sunrises and sunsets! Beach camping? Once again we were wanting to camp right on the beach and Holly Beach seemed like the ideal place. Many other RV’ers had mentioned successful trips onto Holly Beach and we were looking forward to the same. When we arrived Debi and I reconnoitered the beach and it seemed pretty firm and there were a couple of likely spots. Before we moved onto the beach I noticed a local working in his yard and chatted with him (Mike) about camping on the beach.

Mike had the typical weathered look of someone who had lived his entire life working on a fishing boat and had lived in Holly Beach for most of it. Of course Mike had a strong Louisiana accent so you’ll have to imagine the what it sounds like. It made our conversation even more interesting. Our conversation went something like this:

  • Me; Hi
  • Mike; Y’all thinking of camping on the beach (text is unable to properly capture the Louisiana drawl)
  • Me; yes, seems like the sand is firm enough to support our RV
  • Mike; that’s a mighty big rig you got there, you might not want to take it onto the sand. There’s nothing local that would be able to get you unstuck.
  • Me; (thinking why were other campers successful) Why do you think we’ll get stuck?
  • Mike; weeeellll, They spent a few million dollars pumping soft beach sand out of the Gulf for a resort down the road and the last couple of storms washed and blew it up onto our beach. We had a lot of rain recently and that makes it seem like its hard. So now we have a million dollar beach sand that you can’t camp on.
  • Me; awww nutz. We were looking forward to camping on the beach. Any other RV camping spots?
  • Mike; there might be one down the road a bit. You here to do some fishin?
  • Me; Want to, but I need to purchase some gear.
  • Mike; Nah, don’t do that, I gotta coupla rigs y’all can borrow
  • Me; thanks, I’m going down the road a bit to see if I can find a place to park this beast. If I do, I’ll come back and take you up on your offer
  • Mike; good luck!

We went on down the road and found a great little RV camping resort called the “Pickled Pelican” and stayed there for a week. Not on the beach camping but as you can see from the photos, it was just a couple of steps away. We had a great view of the Gulf and for most of the week, the entire place to ourselves. We didn’t go anywhere for the week. It was great!

This is our view from our rig.
Seashells by the seashore!
Debi looking for seashells.
She found a few! The little ones she picked up with a strainer and is going to make them into an epoxy table.
We did get to bring out “Mini” our side by side, and cruise on the beach. And yes the sand was too soft to support our rig.
A little wave and sand video! This was taken the day after a Gale wind blew through.
What does the beach, look like after a Gale (40 mph+ winds) blew all night? THIS!
